Lexicon
Fifty-odd terms, defined rather than translated. The definition changes language; the term does not. Flattening these words into approximate Christian, New Age or psychological equivalents is the single most common way this material gets distorted.
אֲדָמָה
Adamah
The material Adam is named for.
The root shared between the human and the soil is not incidental in a tradition whose stated purpose is a dwelling in the lowest realm.
עַתִּיק יוֹמִין
Atik Yomin
The innermost aspect of Keter, facing beyond.
Distinguished in Kabbalistic literature from Arich Anpin, the aspect facing the worlds. At its innermost point the sources name Reisha DeLo Isyada — the head that is not known, a term that is a confession rather than a description.
עַצְמוּת
Atzmus
Not the highest revelation. Not on the scale of revelation at all.
Chassidus distinguishes Atzmus from every giluy, every revelation. Revelations are graded; Essence is not. This is why the physical world — lowest in the hierarchy of revelation — can be the site of something the spiritual worlds cannot express.
בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ
Beis HaMikdash
Theology that has agreed to be measured.
A building, on a site, with dimensions, personnel, economics and maintenance. Every one of those is a point at which an idea becomes accountable to reality — which is why Rambam's criterion is a building rather than an inspiration.
בֵּרוּר
Birur
The work of extracting and elevating.
The Chassidic reading of milchamos Hashem: not conquest of a people but the sorting of the world's raw material out of the condition in which it presents itself as self-owned.
בִּטּוּל
Bittul
Not I do not exist, but my existence does not originate in me.
Frequently misread as self-erasure. The sources describe an accurate perception of origin, which leaves the person entirely intact and removes the machinery of self-mythology. It is what makes very large authority safe.
חֲסִידוּת
Chassidus
The interior dimension of Torah made teachable.
The movement and the literature that took Kabbalistic material and rendered it available to comprehension rather than to elite transmission alone — which is itself a Messianic operation in miniature.
דַּעַת
Daas / Daat
Knowledge that has become attachment.
The same root Tanach uses for the deepest human intimacy. Not observation, which leaves the observer unchanged, but a knowing in which the knower is altered and cannot step back out.
דִּירָה בַּתַּחְתּוֹנִים
Dirah BeTachtonim
The stated purpose of creation in Chabad Chassidus.
Hashem desired — not needed — a dwelling, not a palace, in the lowest realm, not the spiritual worlds. Every word is load-bearing, and together they make redemption a completion of this world rather than an escape from it.
ה׳
Hashem
The standard reverential reference to G-d.
Used in speech in place of the Name itself. The convention is itself theological: what is most real is not casually pronounced.
מַלְכוּת
Malchus / Malchut
The sefirah with nothing of its own, in which everything becomes public.
Receives from all the others and contributes receptivity. Associated with speech: adds no content and without it the content reaches nobody. At social scale, the arrangement in which truth becomes livable.
מֶלֶךְ הַמָּשִׁיחַ
Melech HaMoshiach
Moshiach considered specifically as reigning king.
The title emphasises office over person. Kingship in Torah is hedged before it is granted and measured by circulation rather than accumulation; the king is bound by the same Torah as everyone else.
מִקְדָּשׁ מְעַט
Mikdash Me'at
The synagogue, the house of study, and by extension the home.
Given dirah betachtonim, the direction of the analogy inverts: the Mikdash is the public instance of what the home is privately.
מֹשֶׁה
Moshe Rabbeinu
The bittul of a perfect receiver.
Stands at the top of a mountain and adds nothing. His greatness is transmission; Moshiach's is revelation from below, and the sources treat these as two phases of one act rather than two Torahs.
מָשִׁיחַ
Moshiach / Mashiach
The Davidic king who completes the purpose of history.
A human being, descended from David, identified by accomplishment rather than by miracle: Torah, kingship, the Mikdash, the ingathering. Not divine, not an object of worship, and — by Rambam's own construction — a falsifiable claim.
פְּנִימִיּוּת
Pnimiyus
The concealed dimension of a thing.
Modelled on oil: it rises above without fighting, penetrates rather than coating, and is released only under pressure. In Torah, the dimension that becomes inhabitable rather than merely glimpsed.
שְׁכִינָה
Shechinah
The Divine as present within the world.
Associated with malchus and spoken of as accompanying Israel into exile. Not a separate being; a term for immanence.
תַּעֲנוּג
Taanug
Desire without deficiency.
Positioned at the innermost point of Keter, above intellect and emotion, and characterised by not being instrumental. It is what makes creation a wanted thing rather than the solution to a problem.
יְחִידָה
Yechidah
Not the fifth level of the soul. The point at which the soul has no levels.
Nefesh, ruach, neshamah and chayah are faculties and can be described as such. Yechidah has no content of its own; it is the soul's bond with Hashem considered before differentiation into faculties. This is why it can be spoken of as the highest term and as fully present in every Jew.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
A city, which is the only structure that holds disagreement and stays one thing.
Read derashically as combining yirah, awe, with shalem, wholeness — the vertical and the horizontal at one address.
