Sources
Every source excerpt used across the fifty chapters, with its classification and the chapters in which it appears. Excerpts are short by design; longer passages are paraphrased and cited.
You are My son; today I have begotten you.
Spoken at a coronation. The begetting has a date, which already rules out any claim about eternal essence.
I will be to him as a Father, and he will be to Me as a son.
The Davidic covenant. The next clause adds: if he sins, I will chastise him — a son who can be disciplined is a subject, not a sharer in Divine essence.
The spirit of Hashem shall rest upon him — a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and strength, a spirit of knowledge and awe of Hashem.
One spirit, unfolding into three pairs. Each faculty arrives with the quality that keeps it honest.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see, nor decide by what his ears hear.
Not a rejection of evidence but of presentation — bearing, fluency, class.
He shall judge the poor with righteousness, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth.
A judicial order is measured where the litigant has least ability to present well.
For the earth shall be filled with knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea.
Not water poured on, but water where water simply is. Ambient rather than acquired.
Hashem shall be King over all the earth; on that day Hashem shall be One and His Name One.
Hashem is One now. What changes is the Name — the world's access to what was never divided.
Hear, Israel: Hashem is our G-d, Hashem is One.
Addressed in the singular to a plural people.
Blessed is the Name of the glory of His kingship for ever and ever.
Said quietly through the year. The truth is available; the arrangement is not yet.
There is nothing else besides Him.
Not one rather than many. One reality, with everything deriving from it rather than standing beside it.
Rachel weeps for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, for they are gone.
The refusal is answered rather than rebuked.
And the children shall return to their border.
Plural children, one border. Not an explanation — a return.
And what are we?
Moshe says this at the height of his authority, not at a low point.
Then our mouth will be filled with laughter, and our tongue with song.
Then — not now. The tense is the argument.
I will raise up the fallen sukkah of David.
A sukkah, not a palace. What is restored is continuous with what fell.
They shall make Me a sanctuary, and I will dwell among them.
Among them, not in it. The building is a mechanism; the dwelling happens in the people.
The Holy One, blessed be He, desired a dwelling in the lower realms.
Desired — not needed. The whole project belongs to the category of will rather than necessity.
He sits among the poor who bear illness.
He unbinds one wound at a time, so as not to be delayed if called. Readiness, not romanticised suffering.
For the fragrance of your good oils — your name is oil poured out.
Oil rises above every liquid, penetrates what it touches, and is released only under pressure.
Last in deed, first in thought.
Nobody builds a foundation because they want a foundation.
Hashem G-d formed the human from dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.
Dust plus breath. Matter given interiority — the template for everything the tradition later says about dwelling below.
And the human knew Chavah his wife.
The standard verb for knowing. Tanach could have chosen another word and consistently did not.
For from Zion shall go forth Torah, and the word of Hashem from Yerushalayim.
Outward motion, from a place, into a world.
Then I will turn to the peoples a clear language, that all of them call in the name of Hashem.
A clear language, not one language. The problem being solved is confusion, not multiplicity.
I have found David My servant; with My holy oil I have anointed him.
Found, not produced. Anointed with oil that is not his.
The Human KingThe Son and the ServantDavid and MalchusThe Anointed OneAdam, David, MoshiachKingship Without Ego
A new Torah shall go forth from Me.
The newness is in the going forth. Nothing is added and nothing is retired.
Behold, I send you Eliyahu the prophet.
The last verses of Nach. His task is described in almost domestic terms — turning hearts.
The heavens and the earth were completed, and all their host.
Completion announced before anything happens on the seventh day.
How he happened upon you on the way.
Read also as kor — cold. The achievement was not victory but the reduction of temperature.
Son of man, stand on your feet.
The phrase locates the prophet inside the human condition at the moment he is shown what exceeds it.
One like a son of man was coming.
Like a son of man. The vision has just shown four kingdoms as beasts; against them appears a figure who is human.
What is man that You remember him, and the son of man that You are mindful of him?
The wonder is not that man is great, but that greatness attends to smallness.
The stone the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.
Read in Jewish tradition of David, and of Israel among the nations.
A star has gone forth from Yaakov, and a staff has risen from Israel.
Read by Rambam and others as referring to David and, through him, to Moshiach.
And you will return to Hashem your G-d.
Teshuvah is return, not remorse. The word carries no vocabulary of guilt.
Your kingship is a kingship of all worlds.
Present tense, said daily by a people for whom it has not been visibly the case for two thousand years.
The heavens are My throne and the earth My footstool — where is the house that you would build for Me?
Not a rejection of the Mikdash. A statement of the paradox the building is designed to hold.
The soul of man is a lamp of Hashem.
A lamp is not a portion of the flame. It is what the flame is present in.
And from my flesh I perceive G-d.
Read in Chassidus as more than analogy. The site of perception is the body.
Taste and see that Hashem is good.
A physical verb the tradition declines to soften into metaphor.
Behold, My servant shall prosper; he shall be exalted and lifted high.
Read in Jewish tradition principally of Israel, the servant, and of the righteous who bear exile.
The earth is Hashem's, and all that fills it.
Ownership stated of the material world, not of a spiritual one.
The bird's nest.
A Zoharic chamber of concealment where the soul of Moshiach waits. Symbolic; not geography, and not a calendar.
The collective Yechidah.
The indivisible point of a people, of which individuals are already expressions.
