The World as Mitzvah
Leather. Parchment. Bread. A doorpost. A coin.
The inventory is the argument. Matter becoming vessel, one object at a time.
This chapter is mostly a list, because the list makes the case better than any sentence about it.
The inventory
Tefillin: leather from an animal, boxes, hair, ink, parchment, and a knot. The most interior act available in the tradition is performed by strapping objects to a body.
Mezuzah: parchment in a case, attached to the frame of a door. Not the centre of the room and not an altar — the threshold, the place a person passes without noticing, marked so that they notice.
Bread: flour, water, an oven, a blessing, and a portion separated. Wine: fruit, time, a cup. Tzitzis: wool, thread, knots counted precisely. Tzedakah: money, which is the most abstract object in the list and still an object.

The material of holiness in this tradition is a hardware store.
Why objects rather than states
Two reasons, both established earlier in this site and both worth restating here where they land.
The first is from the chapter on Atzmus. Physical matter is the point of maximal concealment, and precisely for that reason it is where Essence rather than revelation is at stake. A mitzvah performed with a coin reaches somewhere a mitzvah performed with a feeling does not.
The second is from dirah betachtonim. If the goal is a dwelling in the lowest realm, the work has to be done in the material of that realm. Objects are not a concession to human limitation; they are the address.

Threshold
The mezuzah deserves the last word. It is placed where inside meets outside, on a structural element nobody thinks about, and it is touched in passing rather than contemplated.
That is the whole model in one object. Not a sanctuary one enters to be holy in, but a mark on the ordinary passage between one part of a life and another — which is where, on this account, the entire matter has always been decided.
