Chapter 49Culmination
Hashem Echad
Hashem was always One. The secret of Moshiach is that the world will finally know what that means.
The final theological centre. Moshiach does not make Hashem One and does not become the One. The world becomes capable of perceiving what was never divided.
וְהָיָה ה׳ לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־כׇּל־הָאָרֶץ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִהְיֶה ה׳ אֶחָד וּשְׁמוֹ אֶחָדHashem shall be King over all the earth; on that day Hashem shall be One and His Name One.
Hashem is One now. What changes is the Name — the world's access to what was never divided.
Hashem shall be King over all the earth; on that day Hashem shall be One and His Name One.
Hashem is One now. What changes is the Name — the world's access to what was never divided.
Hashem will be King over all the earth; on that day Hashem will be One and His Name One. The verse has been read for two thousand years and its difficulty is usually skipped: Hashem is One now. What could it mean that He will be One?
The Name
The classical answer turns on the second clause. A name is not what something is; it is how it is known, the point at which a reality becomes available to someone else. Hashem is One already. His Name — the world’s access to Him — is not yet.
So the verse is not describing a change in Hashem. Nothing in Jewish theology permits that. It describes a change in the relationship between a reality and the world that has been unable to read it.
The change is not in the One. It is in the reading.
Three things Moshiach does not do
He does not make Hashem One. Unity is not an achievement and does not admit of degrees; there was never a state of affairs in which it was pending.
He does not become the One. This has been the load-bearing distinction of the entire site. He is a human being, a descendant of David, a servant, a king, called son in the covenantal sense that Tehillim 2 and Shmuel II 7 establish and that the same texts immediately qualify. The nearer he stands, the more clearly he is a creature standing near.
And he is not the object of the recognition. The culmination is not that the world knows Moshiach. It is that the world knows Hashem — and a redeemer whose success left attention resting on himself would not have succeeded.
שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל ה׳ אֱלֹקֵינוּ ה׳ אֶחָדHear, Israel: Hashem is our G-d, Hashem is One.
Addressed in the singular to a plural people.

What is left
Everything this site has covered converges here and can be stated in a few lines.
His Torah brings the world toward daas Hashem. His Mikdash makes holiness spatial. His ingathering makes unity historical. His bittul makes authority safe. His humanity makes a dwelling in the lower world possible, because a dwelling requires someone who lives in the neighbourhood.
אֵין עוֹד מִלְבַדּוֹThere is nothing else besides Him.
Not one rather than many. One reality, with everything deriving from it rather than standing beside it.
There is nothing else besides Him.
Not one rather than many. One reality, with everything deriving from it rather than standing beside it.
And his final success is not that creation worships him. It is that creation — through Torah, kingship, the Mikdash, geulah, and the knowledge that fills the earth as water covers the sea — comes to recognise what was true before any of it began.
Hashem was always One. The world learns what that means.
