Chapitre 20La demeure

There is a hierarchy in the spiritual worlds and it is real. Higher worlds are more refined, less concealed, closer to their source. Within that hierarchy, physical matter is unambiguously at the bottom: opaque, inert, and apparently self-sufficient in a way that nothing spiritual is.

And Chassidus makes a claim that inverts this without denying it.

Revelation is graded. Essence is not.

Everything that can be described as more or less is a giluy, a revelation. Light is graded by definition; that is what light is. So the entire hierarchy of worlds is a hierarchy of revelation, and within it the physical is genuinely lowest.

But Atzmus is not a very great revelation. It is not at the top of the scale; it is not on the scale. Essence is not more infinite than the highest world in the way that world is more infinite than the one below it — the relation is of a different kind entirely. And a thing not on a scale is not further from the bottom of the scale than from the top.

What is beyond all levels is not especially far from the lowest one.

Why the yesh of matter matters

Physical matter has a strange property: it presents itself as existing on its own. A spiritual being knows what it is receiving from. A stone does not, and cannot. Chassidus calls this yesh — thingness, self-evident existence — and treats it not merely as a defect but as a trace.

The reading is that the appearance of self-existence in matter derives from the only genuine self-existence there is. Not that matter is divine — it is emphatically not — but that its peculiar quality of standing there as though it needed nothing comes from the one Reality that in fact needs nothing. The trace is inverted and unconscious, which is exactly what a trace at maximal concealment would look like.

The consequence for mitzvos

This is why mitzvos are performed with objects. Not as a concession to human weakness, and not as symbolism. Leather, wool, silver, wheat, an animal, a coin: the physical object is where the connection is made, because the physical object is where Essence rather than revelation is at stake.

ContexteLu dans la Hassidout comme plus qu’une analogie. Le lieu de la perception est le corps.

From my flesh I perceive — the verse is read in Chassidus as more than analogy. The site of perception is the body, and the material of the mitzvah is the world. Under Moshiach this stops being a paradox to be explained and becomes the ordinary way the world is read.
