With that said, the structural parallel is genuine and the sources develop it at length.

Scattered faculties

Galus at the personal scale is dispersion. Mind in one place, heart in another, body doing a third thing, speech committed to a fourth. Nothing is necessarily wrong with any of the parts; they are simply not in the same country.

Most people can recognise this immediately, and it explains why fragmentation feels like exile even in comfortable circumstances. The parts have not been destroyed. They have been distributed.

Inner exile is not that something is missing. It is that everything present is somewhere else.

Teshuvah as return

Teshuvah is usually translated as repentance, which imports a vocabulary of guilt that the Hebrew does not carry. The word is return — the faculties coming back to the point they are expressions of.

Which is why the Chassidic literature ties teshuvah to yechidah rather than to remorse. The return is possible because there is something to return to that was never itself in exile. The point does not fragment; only its expressions scatter.

Preparation, not substitution

So the relationship between the two redemptions is real, and it runs in one direction only. Personal integration prepares a person to participate in a historical process. It does not perform that process, and it does not make it optional.

The Beis HaMikdash is a building. The ingathering involves aeroplanes and paperwork. A person who has achieved remarkable inner unity has not thereby gathered anyone. The tradition holds both scales without allowing the smaller one to absorb the larger, and the discipline of that refusal is worth keeping.
