בן אדם — ben adam — literally, son of Adam. In Tanach it is the plainest possible word for a person. Yechezkel is addressed by it dozens of times, and every time it functions the same way: it locates the prophet inside the human condition at the exact moment he is being shown something that exceeds it.
The phrase carries earth in it. Adam is named for adamah, ground. The first human is formed from soil and given breath, and the sequence matters: the body is not a container that the soul reluctantly occupies. It is the site of the whole event.
Why the redeemer cannot be an angel
This is the load-bearing point of the chapter. An angel is a pure and unambiguous being. It has no conflict, no appetite, no capacity to misunderstand itself. And precisely for that reason it cannot redeem anything, because redemption in the Torah’s sense is not the removal of the lower world but its conversion into a dwelling.
A being that has never been tempted cannot sanctify appetite. A being with no body cannot make the body holy. A being outside history cannot bring history to its purpose. Moshiach must live inside the conditions he transforms — must eat, must sleep, must be subject to physical law — or the transformation is a rescue rather than a fulfilment.
His humanity is not a limitation on the Messianic idea. It is the point of it.
On Daniel 7
One verse deserves careful handling, because it has been carried far from its Jewish setting.
The Aramaic is כבר אנש — like a son of man. The word like is doing decisive work. Daniel’s vision has just presented four kingdoms as beasts. Against the beasts, a figure appears who is not bestial but human. Chazal read the passage messianically, and the messianic reading is precisely the humane one: the sovereignty that endures is the one that looks like a person rather than a predator. The verse is a contrast with beasts, not a claim about divinity.
Mortality is not a defect in the theory
Tehillim asks the question directly, and does not resolve it by promoting the human.
The wonder in that verse is not that man is great. It is that greatness attends to smallness. Moshiach stands at the far end of that same asymmetry: he is remembered, chosen and appointed, and he remains small in exactly the way that makes the choosing meaningful.
He is close enough to heaven to carry Ruach Hashem, and human enough to build with stone.
