Torah goes out from Zion. The direction is outward, and the destination is unspecified — which is to say, everywhere. The city is not a terminus but a source.

Yirah and shalem

The midrashic reading of the name combines two earlier names: the place Avraham called yireh and the city Shalem of Malki-Tzedek. Yirah — awe, seeing, the vertical. Shalem — wholeness, peace, completion, the horizontal.

The derashah is not etymology and does not need to be. It is a statement about what the city is for: a place where the vertical and the horizontal are the same address. Awe without wholeness is terror; wholeness without awe is comfort. The name insists on both.

Why a city

A shrine holds one purpose. A city holds all of them at once — commerce, law, family, worship, education, waste disposal, argument. It is the only human structure that does not require its inhabitants to agree in order to function.

This makes it the correct image for the Messianic vision, which is repeatedly described as integrating rather than homogenising. The prophets do not describe a monastery. They describe streets with old people sitting in them and children playing in them, which is an image of ordinary urban life continuing under changed conditions.

Redemption looks like a functioning city, which is a stranger claim than it sounds.

Many nations, one purpose

The prophetic vision has the nations coming to Yerushalayim, and it is careful about what happens when they arrive. They come to learn, and they go back. They do not become Israel and Israel does not become them. The city integrates without absorbing, which is the subject of the next chapter.
