Kapitel 27Die Wohnung

Kurz gefasst

Universale Anerkennung Haschems ohne erzwungene Vereinheitlichung.

Ki az ehpoch el amim safah verurah

Tzefaniah 3:9Tanach

I will turn to the peoples a clear language, that all of them call in the name of Hashem and serve Him with one shoulder. The verse is the clearest statement of the universal dimension, and each of its clauses is precise.

A clear language, not one language

Safah verurah — a clear or purified language. Not a single tongue. The problem being solved is not multiplicity but confusion; the model in the background is Bavel, where the failure was not that people spoke differently but that they could no longer mean anything together.

One shoulder — shechem echad — is likewise an image of coordinated effort, not identical effort. Shoulders carry different corners of the same load.

Homogenisation

Difference eliminated. One people, one practice, one form. Unity by subtraction.

Differentiated unity

Difference retained. Many peoples, one recognition. Unity by orientation.

What is not claimed

This chapter needs to be explicit about two things it is not saying, because both have been read into these verses historically and both are distortions.

It is not saying that the nations become Jewish. The halachic framework for non-Jews in the Messianic era is the Noachide covenant, not conversion, and Rambam is explicit that the era’s purpose is knowledge of Hashem rather than universal Jewish observance. Difference of obligation persists.

And it is not saying that Israel’s vindication consists in others’ subjugation. Triumphalist readings of these passages exist and are a misuse of them. The verses describe recognition — nations acknowledging what is true — and the tradition consistently frames this as the world becoming accurate, not as a settling of scores.

Vehayah Hashem lemelech al kol ha'aretz…

Zechariah 14:9Tanach

The nations are not corrected into sameness. They are relieved of a misdescription of reality.

It is worth noticing how much of the redemption, in the sources, consists of things becoming perceptible rather than things being enforced. That is not a softening of the claim. It is the claim.
