Der verwundete Erlöser

The Talmud in Sanhedrin records an exchange in which R. Yehoshua ben Levi is told where to find Moshiach. The answer is not a palace and not a yeshivah. He is at the gate of the city, among the poor who bear illness.

And there is a detail that the passage lingers on. The others unbind all their wounds at once and rebind them. He unbinds one at a time and rebinds it, because he says: perhaps I will be needed, and I must not be delayed.

What the detail means

This is not an image about suffering being redemptive. Nothing in the passage suggests that his wounds accomplish anything, and the tradition is generally hostile to the idea that pain is meritorious in itself. The detail is about readiness.

He is in a condition that would justify absence, and he has arranged himself so that absence is impossible. The one-at-a-time bandaging is a logistical decision, and it is the most human moment in the entire messianic literature: a man managing his own body around the possibility of being called.

Why among the afflicted

Because that is where the information is. A leader who has only known capacity does not know what a system does to people at its edges. The sources place Moshiach among those the world has cost the most, and the placement is a claim about the kind of knowledge kingship requires.

It also refuses a particular fantasy. The redeemer is not waiting in glory for conditions to become worthy of him. He is inside the conditions, indistinguishable from the others at the gate, and the difference is not visible from outside — which is consistent with everything else the tradition says about how he will be recognised.

One further caution. This chapter is deliberately restrained, because the aesthetic of the wounded redeemer is easy to enjoy. Suffering here is a circumstance to be ended, not a beauty to be contemplated. The passage ends with him leaving the gate.
