Three figures stand at three positions in one movement, and the movement is the point rather than any of the three.

Adam

Adam is humanity in an undivided state — before history, before nations, before the accumulation of everything that had to be learned the hard way. He is whole, and his wholeness is untested. It has not survived anything, because nothing has happened yet.

The formation is the template: dust plus breath, matter that has been given interiority. Everything the tradition later says about dirah betachtonim is already implicit in that sentence.

David

David stands in the middle, and the middle is where the cost is. He is entirely inside history — politics, war, family catastrophe, sin, consequence. He is not whole in Adam’s sense and never becomes so. What he has instead is a relationship that survives everything that happens to it, which is a different and more durable achievement.

This is why kingship enters through him rather than through someone unblemished. A monarchy founded by a man with no failures would have nothing to say to anyone, and no mechanism for continuing after its own mistakes.

Moshiach

Moshiach stands at the far end, and the crucial claim is that he is not a return to Adam. Nothing is rewound. The wholeness at the end is not the wholeness at the beginning recovered; it is a wholeness that has been through the middle and carries what happened there.

Adam

Whole, and untested. Wholeness that has not yet met history.

Moshiach

Whole, and tested. Wholeness that contains the history it came through.

The end is not the beginning again. It is the beginning, having found out what it was for.

This is also the structural reason the sources refuse to make Moshiach a supernatural figure. If he were, the middle would have been unnecessary — history would be an interruption rather than the substance of the thing. The whole arc insists that what was learned on the road is carried into the destination.
