David is chosen from the field. He is the youngest, he is not summoned to the initial gathering, and he arrives smelling of sheep. The tradition never lets this detail go, because the whole theology of Jewish kingship is contained in it.

Found — not produced. Anointed with oil that is not his. The verse gives kingship an origin outside the king in its first clause.
Malchus as a sefirah
In Kabbalistic terms David is associated with malchus, the last of the ten sefiros, and malchus has a peculiar property: it has nothing of its own. Chochmah has insight. Chesed has love. Gevurah has restraint. Malchus is pure receptivity — it takes what the others have generated and turns it into a functioning world of speech, relationship and rule.
This is not a demotion. It is the reason malchus is the point at which anything actually happens. An insight nobody can live in has not entered the world. Kingship is the faculty that converts truth into arrangement.
Chochmah
Knows.
Malchus
Makes a world capable of living what is known.
The pursued king
Half of David’s life is spent being hunted by the king he will replace, and the Tehillim written from caves are not incidental to his kingship — they are its training. A man who has been powerless writes differently about power. The psalms are full of a strange combination: absolute confidence in Hashem and almost no confidence in himself.
That combination is exactly what makes his authority safe, and it is the trait the sources transfer to Moshiach. Descent precedes ascent, not as a poetic pattern but as a mechanism: authority that has never been suspended in mid-air tends to imagine it is self-supporting.
The fallen sukkah
The house of David is called a sukkah, not a palace — a temporary structure, easily damaged, and repaired rather than rebuilt from nothing. The word choice is deliberate. What is restored is continuous with what fell. Moshiach is not a new institution; he is the same fragile, deliberately unfortified thing standing up again.
