Keter means crown, and the choice of word is doing precise work. A crown is worn on the head; it is not part of the head. It is intimately associated with the person and entirely external to the person’s own faculties.

So Keter is counted among the sefiros and simultaneously described as above them — the will and delight that precede intellect, that are not a form of intellect, and that determine what the intellect will find interesting before it starts thinking.

Why will is not a faculty among faculties

Consider what happens when someone wants something. The wanting does not appear at the end of a reasoning process; it sets the reasoning process going and determines which considerations register as considerations. A person who wants to travel finds arguments for travel persuasive.

This is not a defect of reasoning. It is the structural position of will: prior, unarguable, and constitutive of the space in which arguing happens. Keter names that position.

You do not reason your way to what you want. You reason inside it.

Atik and Radla

Within Keter the sources distinguish further — Atik Yomin, the aspect facing beyond, and Arich Anpin, the aspect facing the worlds. And at the innermost point, a term that is a confession rather than a description: Reisha DeLo Isyada, the head that is not known.

This is one of the most important formulations in Kabbalistic literature, and its importance is methodological. A system that generates infinite terminology has a mechanism for stopping. The name of the highest term is an admission that the naming has failed.

Why more light is not enough

Here is the point the whole chapter exists for. A great deal of religious imagination pictures redemption as an increase — more revelation, more clarity, more light. Chassidus is emphatic that this is not what is being described.

Light is graded, and any amount of it is still a revelation, still adapted to a vessel, still an accommodation. What the sources describe for the Messianic era is a change in the relationship between light and vessel — the essence reorganising the vessel rather than filling it.

This is the same structure as the eighth string, the same structure as dirah betachtonim, and the same structure as yechidah. In each case the claim is not that more arrives, but that what arrives is of a different order and does not stay above.
