The most detailed portrait of the Messianic character in Tanach is a single verse, and it is easy to read as a list of superlatives. It is not a list. It is a description of an integration.

וְנָחָה עָלָיו רוּחַ ה׳ רוּחַ חׇכְמָה וּבִינָה רוּחַ עֵצָה וּגְבוּרָה רוּחַ דַּעַת וְיִרְאַת ה׳

Six, resting on one

The structure is precise. One spirit rests on him — ruach Hashem — and then three pairs unfold from it: chochmah and binah, eitzah and gevurah, daas and yiras Hashem. Each pair joins a faculty of perception with the capacity that keeps it honest.

Chochmah is the flash of insight, the thing seen before it can be explained. Binah is the patient unpacking of it into structure. Insight without analysis is intuition that cannot be examined; analysis without insight is competence with nothing to be competent about.

Eitzah is counsel — the practical judgement that knows what should be done in a particular situation with particular people. Gevurah is the strength to actually do it, including the strength to refrain. Counsel without strength is advice nobody follows. Strength without counsel is force.

Daas is knowledge that has become attachment rather than information. Yiras Hashem is the awe that keeps knowledge from curdling into ownership. This last pair is the hinge of the whole verse: the more a person knows of Hashem, the more clearly he perceives the distance he has not crossed.

Every gift in the verse arrives with its own restraint attached.

What the verse rules out

Read this way, Yeshayahu 11:2 functions as a filter. It excludes the brilliant leader with no judgement, the decisive leader with no wisdom, the powerful leader with no fear of Heaven, and the visionary leader with no capacity to explain himself. Each of these is a recognisable failure mode of religious authority, and the verse forecloses all of them in a single sentence.

And it excludes something subtler. Nowhere in the list is there a quality that belongs to Moshiach independently. Every item is a form of ruach Hashem resting on him. The verse describes a man who is thoroughly filled and not at all self-originating — which is the same point Chassidus makes with the word bittul, arrived at from a completely different direction.

The next verse draws the practical consequence, and it is the subject of a later chapter: he will not judge by what his eyes see.

וְלֹא־לְמַרְאֵה עֵינָיו יִשְׁפּוֹט וְלֹא־לְמִשְׁמַע אׇזְנָיו יוֹכִיחַ
