פרק 42הדירה

כלכלה, כוח ושלטון

עושר הוא שאלה של כיוון, לא של כמות.

The prophetic descriptions of the Messianic era include material abundance, and they are consistently uninterested in it as an end. Rambam’s summary is explicit that the reason to want the era is not the plenty but the freedom it creates to occupy oneself with Torah and wisdom.

Which reframes the question that any economy is an answer to. Not how much, but for what.

Abundance as available attention

Poverty consumes cognition. A person managing scarcity is spending their best faculties on logistics, and the loss is not moral but arithmetical — attention spent on survival is not available for anything else.

In this reading the point of abundance is released attention. That is a real claim with real implications: an economy producing enormous output while consuming everyone’s attention has not accomplished the thing abundance was for.

Wealth is not measured by what is produced. It is measured by what becomes possible.

Power as stewardship

The chapter on kingship without ego supplies the frame. Authority in the Torah’s conception is held rather than owned, hedged before it is granted, and measured by circulation rather than accumulation.

And the measure of a governing order, in Yeshayahu’s formulation, is what happens to the people with the least ability to advocate for themselves. That is not a policy prescription; it is a criterion, and it is the sort of thing the sources actually give us.

Why no programme

Because the sources do not contain one, and constructing a utopian policy from prophetic verses is exactly the operation this site has been arguing against everywhere else. The prophets give criteria — the treatment of the poor, the honesty of weights, the independence of judges — and criteria are portable across economic arrangements in a way that programmes are not.

Anyone claiming that Torah mandates a particular modern economic system is doing something the texts do not support. The criteria are demanding enough without it.
