The sources describe Israel as one body with many limbs, and it is worth taking the metaphor seriously enough to notice what it rules out.

What an organism is not

An organism is not a hierarchy of value. The hand is not a failed head. A liver is not a lesser lung. Function differs completely and worth does not, because the question of which organ is better is not a question the organism can ask — remove any of them and there is no organism to have the discussion.

It is also not a collection. The parts are not prior to the whole; a hand separated from a body is a hand only in name and stops being one very quickly. The whole is what makes the parts what they are, which is precisely the relation the chapter on the collective soul describes in soul-terms.

The heart

In this scheme the king is the heart, and the previous chapter has already drawn the consequence: centrality by circulation. Here the emphasis is on the other side of the relation — what the limbs get.

Everything the heart moves belongs to the body. Nothing is manufactured at the centre. The circulation carries what was already there and delivers it where it is needed, which is why the sources can describe Moshiach as awakening the people rather than instructing them: he is moving something that is theirs.

Tribes

The persistence of tribal structure in the descriptions of the future is not nostalgia. Yechezkel’s division of the land is meticulous about portions; the future Mikdash has gates named for tribes. The redeemed condition retains internal difference at the level of institutions, not merely of taste.

This is the strongest available refutation of the idea that unity means uniformity. If the end-state envisioned by the prophets keeps twelve distinct portions and twelve distinct gates, then whatever is being unified is not being flattened.
